Here’s the tooth (truth)!
Here are a few common questions and answers about visiting the dentist! If you have another question, just ask us!
General Questions
Why should I go to the dentist regularly?
Regular dental appointments and check-ups are important. While some believe they’ll save money by skipping their appointment, it could end up costing more in the long term. Regular check-ups include the removal of plaque and tartar to help prevent gum disease, as well as checking your gums, teeth, head, neck, and lymph nodes for abnormalities. Early detection can prevent bigger problems from developing!
What is a cavity?
A cavity is a small hole that forms inside the tooth because of tooth decay. Cavities form when plaque buildup on the outside of the tooth combines with sugars and starches in the food you eat, which produces an acid that eats away the enamel on your tooth.
How can I prevent cavities?
- Brush your teeth at least twice a day for 2-3 minutes.
- Floss daily.
- Limit the amount of sugar you are consuming.
- Brush your teeth or rinse your mouth out with water after you eat fruit, peanut butter or sweets.
- Ask us to place sealants on susceptible teeth
Why should I floss?
Flossing removes bacteria from the tiny spaces between your teeth that your toothbrush can’t reach. Without flossing, you’re leaving plaque behind that will eventually harden into tarter that can only be professionally removed.
When should I change my toothbrush?
Toothbrushes wear out with regular use. We encourage our patients to change their toothbrush every three months or after being sick.
Why does the dentist take X-rays?
An X-ray examination can reveal:
- Small areas of decay
- Infections
- Periodontal disease
- Abscesses or cysts
- Developments in the teeth
- Certain types of tumors
How can I get my kids to brush their teeth?
Make it fun! Throw on a song and have them brush to it or get them their favorite superhero-themed brush. Being a good role model for your kids will go a long way. If they see you being enthusiastic about brushing your teeth, they will follow your lead.
