Emergency Dentistry in Yukon, OK

A dental emergency does not wait for a convenient time to arrive. Whether it is a severe toothache that develops overnight, a tooth knocked out during a weekend activity, or a cracked crown that happens mid-week, the pain and uncertainty that come with a dental emergency demand a fast, reliable response. Waiting days for an appointment or turning to a hospital emergency room is not the answer, as ERs can treat pain temporarily but cannot resolve the underlying dental problem.

At Reed Dental Care, we are here when our patients need us most. Dr. William Reed graduated from the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry in 2010 and has spent his career providing comprehensive, high-quality dental care throughout Oklahoma. As part of our commitment to serving the Yukon community, our team makes every effort to see patients experiencing dental emergencies as quickly as possible so that pain is addressed promptly and treatment is delivered before the situation worsens. Our general dentist services are built around the idea that every patient deserves attentive, thorough care, and that does not change when the need is urgent.

What Counts as a Dental Emergency?

Not every dental concern requires same-day attention, but some situations are urgent enough that delaying care can lead to more serious consequences. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, tooth disorders accounted for an annual average of nearly 2 million emergency department visits during 2020 through 2022, the vast majority of which could have been managed more effectively by a dental provider. Recognizing the difference between a problem that can wait and one that cannot is an important first step in knowing when to call our office right away. Common dental emergencies that should be treated as soon as possible include:

  • Severe or persistent toothache that does not respond to over-the-counter pain relief
  • A knocked-out or partially dislodged tooth
  • A cracked, fractured, or broken tooth causing significant pain
  • A lost or broken dental crown, bridge, or filling that leaves the tooth exposed
  • A dental abscess or signs of oral infection, including swelling, fever, or a bad taste

If you are experiencing any of these situations, contact our office immediately. The sooner we can evaluate and treat the problem, the better the outcome is likely to be.

Common Emergency Treatments We Provide

Dental emergencies take many different forms, and the treatment needed depends entirely on the nature and severity of the situation. At Reed Dental Care, we are equipped to handle a wide range of urgent dental concerns in a single visit, using the most current technology available to diagnose and treat the problem as efficiently as possible.

Toothache Relief and Infection Treatment

Severe tooth pain is most often a sign that something significant is happening beneath the surface, whether that is deep decay, a crack, or an infection that has reached the inner tooth. Our team will conduct a thorough examination using low-dose digital X-rays to identify the source of the pain and determine the best course of treatment. Depending on the diagnosis, that may include a root canal, an extraction, or targeted infection management to relieve the pain and protect the surrounding teeth.

Cracked and Broken Teeth

A cracked or broken tooth can range from a minor chip to a significant fracture that threatens the structural integrity of the tooth entirely. When a break is substantial, leaving it untreated can allow bacteria to enter the inner layers of the tooth and lead to infection. We assess the extent of the damage and recommend the most appropriate restoration, whether that is bonding for a minor chip, a crown to protect a more seriously damaged tooth, or another solution that preserves as much of the natural tooth structure as possible. Our same-day CEREC crown technology means that in many cases, a crown can be designed and placed in a single visit without a temporary or a return appointment.

Knocked-Out Teeth

A tooth that has been completely knocked out has the best chance of being saved when a dentist is seen within an hour of the injury. If this happens to you, handle the tooth by the crown rather than the root, rinse it gently if it is dirty, and keep it moist by placing it back in the socket if possible, storing it between your cheek and gum, or placing it in a small container of milk. Then call our office right away. Time is critical in these situations, and our team will do everything possible to assess whether the tooth can be reimplanted and stabilized.

Lost Crowns and Fillings

Losing a crown or filling is not always painful, but it does leave the affected tooth vulnerable to further damage and decay. Exposed tooth structure can be sensitive to temperature and pressure, and without the protection of the restoration, the tooth may crack or collect bacteria quickly. We treat lost or broken restorations as urgent care situations and work to replace or repair them as soon as possible to restore protection and comfort. Patients who want to understand how we approach restorative dentistry in general can review our full range of services.

How to Handle a Dental Emergency Before Your Appointment

While getting to our office quickly is always the priority, there are steps you can take in the meantime to manage pain and protect the affected tooth. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help reduce discomfort temporarily, and a cold compress applied to the outside of the face near the affected area can reduce swelling. Avoid chewing on the side of the mouth where the problem is located, and do not attempt to repair a broken tooth or replace a lost crown with adhesives not designed for dental use.

Most importantly, call our office as soon as the emergency occurs. Our team can walk you through any immediate steps over the phone and get you scheduled for evaluation as quickly as possible. Staying calm and acting promptly gives us the best opportunity to address the problem effectively and preserve the tooth whenever possible. Keeping up with routine preventative care visits is also one of the best ways to catch issues early before they develop into full dental emergencies.
